Union members on frontline of trade war response

Canada Employment and Immigration Union members are on the frontlines of the trade war, working to protect Canadian workers and an economy impacted by American tariffs.

“The federal public service is being attacked amidst an escalation in the trade war, and now we are on the frontlines of the economic response,” said Shimen Fayad, a representative of CEIU. “It’s in times of crisis that we realize how vital the public sector is to maintaining a healthy and resilient Canadian economy.”

The federal government recently introduced a $7.5 billion package of measures in response to the American tariffs, which contains $3.5 billion in “Rapid Response Supports for Workers and Employers,” much of which is being implemented by CEIU members.

This includes temporary changes to Employment Insurance, a workforce retention program, additional workforce training measures, and improved supports for job seekers.

Despite the rollout of this support package, over 5,000 jobs are being cut at Employment and Social Development Canada following an announcement this past January. Federal workers are having to do more with less.

CEIU members are proud to support Canadians and the economy amidst the latest attack in this trade war. To do so, we need a robust and well-resourced public service.
