CEIU celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada. It’s a day to celebrate the cultures and traditions of Indigenous peoples across Canada.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the day it was first declared by the government of Canada, but summer solstice has always been a significant time First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples on Turtle Island. June 21 signifies the arrival of warmer weather, the beginning of summer, and symbolizes a new season of life.
CEIU encourages all of our members to participate in National Indigenous Peoples’ Day, by learning, by participating in events, and by connecting with Indigenous peoples and communities.
Here are some ways you can participate:
- Join the celebrations! This website links to a list and map of events across Canada, or find other events in your area.
- Learn something new: CEIU’s list of resources can get you started on your journey to learning about Indigenous history, perspectives and how to be an ally.
- Explore information the Indigenous territories, treaties, and languages where you live or work at native-land.ca
- Experience Indigenous cultures: Seek out an Indigenous restaurant or food truck, listen to music by Indigenous musicians, view an Indigenous art exhibit, read a book by an Indigenous author, etc.
