International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia
May 14, 2026 | By Matthew Brett
On May 17, we mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT)—a day to stand in solidarity with 2SLGBTQIA+ communities and to reaffirm our collective commitment to dignity, respect, and equality for all.
The CEIU National Human Rights and Race Relations Committee (HRRR) recognizes that discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression continues to affect workers across our workplaces and communities. As union members, we have both the responsibility and the power to challenge prejudice, remove barriers, and create safer, more inclusive environments for everyone.
This day is not only about awareness—it is about action. It is about listening to the lived experiences of our colleagues, supporting one another, and advocating for policies and practices that protect and uplift 2SLGBTQIA+ members. Whether it’s addressing harmful language, standing up against discrimination, or promoting inclusive workplace initiatives, each of us has a role to play.
We encourage all members to take a moment on May 17 to reflect, learn, and engage. Together, we can build a union and a community where everyone is free to be who they are without fear.
Here are some things you can do today and throughout the year:
- Learn: Learn about the experiences of 2SLGBTQIA+ people. Here are some resources to get you started.
- Raise awareness: Share facts, resources, and stories made by 2SLGBTQIA+ people.
- Show visible support: Display rainbow flags or other symbols of solidarity, where it is safe to do so.
- Challenge injustice when you see it: Act when you witness discrimination or exclusion in your workplace, school, family, or neighbourhood.
- Support or join an event: Get involved in IDAHOBIT activities. Search for events in your area to attend in-person or virtually.
