This Labour Day, CEIU says no to budget cuts Thumbnail

This Labour Day, as we celebrate the labour movement at events across the country, we want to send a clear message to the minority Liberal government: no to budget cuts.

Liberal Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne recently directed ministers find 15 per cent in savings in their respective departments over the next three years.

Departments were to submit their budget cut proposals by August 28 and indicated that they would not consulting with unions on this process.

Putting the public first

CEIU is pushing back against these proposed cuts alongside the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), organizing to defend good jobs, and presenting real alternatives including:

  • Expanding and supporting telework
  • Reducing reliance on costly consultants and contracting out
  • Reducing executive-level positions
  • Cutting unnecessary spending on employee surveillance and excessive data collection

We have submitted alternative savings proposals that would not result in job cuts to Employment and Social Development Canada, the Immigration and Refugee Board, and to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

Building union power: get involved in your local

As we saw with the Air Canada flight attendants’ strike, the strength of a unions relies upon an active and united membership.

When the federal government attacked flight attendants’ right to strike, union members stood up and fought back.

A union is only as strong as its membership, and that strength depends on members getting actively involved.

The most important place to get involved is in your local union. Nationally, CEIU is comprised of over 160 locals.

Find your local here and reach out to say you’d like to get involved!
