International Day of Persons with Disabilities
December 2, 2025 | By Ailish Morgan Welden
December 3 marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a time to recognize the contributions, experiences, and rights of workers living with disabilities—whether visible, invisible, permanent, or episodic.
Our union stands in solidarity with every member who faces barriers in the workplace. Accessibility is not a privilege or an afterthought. It is a fundamental human right. Under the Canadian Human Rights Act, employers have a legal duty to accommodate employees to the point of undue hardship. As a union, we are committed to ensuring that these rights are respected, upheld, and applied fairly.
Disabilities come in many forms, and many cannot be seen. Members living with chronic pain, mental health conditions, neurodivergence, and other invisible disabilities deserve the same understanding, respect, and support as those with visible ones. Eliminating stigma is essential to building a healthy and inclusive workplace.
This day serves as a reminder that accessibility removes barriers not just for some, but for everyone. From flexible work arrangements and ergonomic tools to accessible communications and respectful processes, inclusive design benefits the entire workforce.
Our union will continue to advocate for:
- Timely and fair accommodation processes
- Barrier-free workplaces
- Inclusive policies and practices
- A culture where no member fears discrimination for seeking support
To every member with a disability: your rights matter, your experiences matter, and you belong here. Today—and every day—we reaffirm our commitment to standing with you and fighting for workplaces where everyone can thrive.
If you need support with accommodations or have questions about your rights, please reach out to your union representative.
