Members share commitments to human rights
December 10, 2025 | By Ailish Morgan Welden
December 10 is Human Rights Day, a day observed around the world to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
On this day, we recognize that all humans have fundamental rights and the right to live their lives with dignity and freedom, regardless of where they live, their race, colour, ethnic origin, sex, age, gender identity, language, religion, family status, disability, or social condition.
CEIU commits to these principles and advocates for justice and human rights for all our members and all workers, and to fighting against oppression.
In June 2025, CEIU held its triennial National Human Rights Conference, gathering members from across Canada who are committed to advancing human rights within our union.
Conference delegates were asked to share their voices on a virtual billboard by stating their “commitment to human rights.”
Here are some of those responses:
- My commitment to human rights is grounded in lived experience, advocacy, and a deep belief that equity must be actively fought for at every level of our union.
- My commitment to human rights is in the belief that every individual deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and fairness, regardless of their background, identity, or circumstances.
- My commitment is to ensure that everyone feels included, listened to, and respected. The diversity of a team is its strength.
- I commit to speaking out against injustices, amplifying voices, and moving with compassion and care for others.
- I commit to continuing to actively work towards human rights, racial justice, decolonization in all aspects of my life, community, and professional practice.
- To listen to everyone, particularly disenfranchised groups who are often not listened to, with an open mind and open heart on how we can advance their human rights.
- As a union representative committed to human rights, I am dedicated to fighting all forms of discrimination and injustice, and to promoting inclusion, equity, and fair representation of historically marginalized groups.
- My commitment is to lift the voices that need lifting by using the platform that I have been given, no matter the place and time.
