Cornwall Local President chosen as federal NDP candidate

There may or may not be a federal election this spring. But whenever it comes, Mario Leclerc will be ready. The president of Local 621 was chosen February 23 as the standard-bearer for the New Democratic Party in the eastern-Ontario riding of Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry.

Such community activism is nothing new for Mario, a Quebec City native who works as a payment officer for Service Canada in Cornwall. He is both an executive member of the Cornwall and District Labour Council and president of the PSAC Eastern Ontario Council. Mario is also extremely active in the community and writes a regular column in a local newspaper.

Mario promised his supporters “a great fight” against the Harper government’s planned corporate tax cuts and for regional economic development, ‘green’ jobs and the defence of public services.

In a congratulatory note, national president Jeannette Meunier-McKay told Mario that his “commitment and activism are in the best tradition of social unionism and is something of which all CEIU members – in Cornwall and across the country – can be proud.”
