Beware of the Employer’s Code of Conduct

CEIU would like to caution all members, once again about the employer’s Code of Values and Ethics. This code severely restricts what any Public Service Worker can do or say in the workplace or out of it. We advise each and every one of you to take the time to read the policy of your department and become familiar with it. In simple terms, if you make any public statement, or are overheard making any statement in public that contradicts or goes against a seated government’s position – of course including your own department – or policy you could be subject to discipline up to and including termination.  With the current trends at the federal level, even union activists including elected members should be careful.

You should take similar precautions when using any part of the employer’s communication system. Under certain circumstances, the employer could access your work emails or track your internet history.  Emails could fall under a request of access to information (ATIP), giving anyone potentially access to their content.

Be aware of what you say or write.
