Windsor local challenges planned government cuts

CEIU Local 601 in Windsor, Ontario held a noon hour demonstration against the Harper government’s planned cuts to federal programs and the staff who deliver them. Members fear the local impact of cuts on both clients and the wider community.

Local 601 President Sueanne Allen told reporters that there are already times when clients are lined up outside the doors and cuts to staff will only make things worse. “We want to tell the public that these cuts will hurt them as well as the staff at CIC.”

A well-organized local made sure that the demonstration came together as planned and media advisories provided by the CEIU national office ensured that a number of Windsor media outlets covered the event. “I think our local in Windsor did a fantastic job,” said National President Jeannette Meunier-McKay, “and this is a good example of how the local and national levels can work effectively to get out the message that we need to improve services, not cut them.”

Citizenship and Immigration Canada is responsible for immigration, settlement, resettlement, citizenship and multiculturalism programs and services. Among other services, Windsor CIC staff provide front counter, face-to-face service to the public regarding immigration and citizenship matters.
