Ontario Conference takes message to Minister of Justice

Delegates to CEIU Ontario’s Conference of Local Representatives demonstrated at the constituency office of Tory Justice Minister Rob Nicholson to call for an end to job cuts and office closures at Service Canada.

More than 60 members demonstrated first at the Niagara Falls constituency office of Minister Nicholson before rallying at the local Service Canada office. Pointing to cuts to term staff, the national consolidation of EI processing sites from 120 to 19 and the closure of offices such as the Canada Pensions call centre in Hamilton, the union called for a restoration of high quality public services and the jobs that make them possible.

Speaking at the demonstrations, National Executive Vice-President Steve McCuaig asked members “Are you proud to serve the Canadian public?” To the resounding “Yes!” McCuaig responded “Then let’s stop the government from making it impossible for you to do your jobs!”
