Northern Ontario members prepare for jobs rally on May 19

Communities in Northern Ontario are losing jobs at an alarming rate, but on May 19 they are rallying to push for a better future. Job losses have come in both the private and public sectors, with Service Canada’s decision to tag many locations in the north as “non-growth areas” contributing to the work outflow.

CEIU Local Presidents Laura St-Jean (Timmins) and Connie Lento (Sault Ste. Marie) are helping to organize the rally. It will begin at MP Tony Martin’s constituency office, 369 Queen St. E., Sault Ste. Marie, between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. before proceeding to city hall.

Joining the speakers at city hall will be CEIU National President Jeannette Meunier-McKay, a native of New Liskeard, Ontario. “I’m looking forward to seeing CEIU members at the rally” she said, “because this is an important day for all Northerners.”
