Hamilton members demonstrate against call centre closure

CEIU Local 649 (Hamilton, Ontario) members picketed their Service Canada office in response to the decision to close the Canada Pension Call Centre in Hamilton. The call centre is slated to close by 2014 but the local plans to continue the campaign to save the workplace and the services it offers.

The concerns go beyond the call centre closure to include the radical reduction in the number of sites for EI claims processing. These cuts, first announced by Service Canada in August, will affect 600 positions across the country as processing sites plummet from 120 to 19 over the next three years. EI processing staff in Hamilton will be among those impacted and a number of them attended Local 649’s rally.

Local President Donna Kinchen voiced concern over the reduction of service to the public, noting the special needs of the elderly and disabled that contact the call centre, and stated “This is just the beginning of our campaign to save the centre and the provision of quality services in Hamilton.”
