Name tag story at Service Canada attracts media attention

Worker safety issues are often highlighted when death or injuries occur, but preventative action taken to improve safety tends to receive less coverage in the media. A welcome change to this pattern came with the media coverage of CEIU’s work to reverse Service Canada’s position on the issue of name tags.

The decision to let staff opt out of displaying their family name on identification tags was a clear victory for worker safety. Members across the country rallied against the initial decision requiring the display of family names on tags and the employer came to accept the real threat this requirement contained.

Radio-Canada recently spoke with National President Jeannette Meunier-McKay on the name tag issue, producing both a print story and video interview (French only).

The CBC also printed a story on the issue at their website which attracted pages of comments, most supportive of the position taken by members.
