CEIU proposes joint approach to introduction of new work descriptions

Union responds to major changes at Service Canada

CEIU has proposed that the new generic work descriptions at Service Canada be reviewed by joint union-management committees. The work descriptions are extremely broad in nature and members are understandably concerned that their work be fully reflected and valued in them.

The new work descriptions were announced as part of Service Canada’s new structural model. The model reduces hundreds of job types currently found at Service Canada to approximately 30. “Members need to see the work they do properly reflected in these new work descriptions. If they don’t, they will not feel properly recognized and valued.” said National President Jeannette Meunier-McKay.

The union is proposing that joint union-management committees review each of the new work descriptions to ensure they are accurate and complete. Members would sit on the committees and would be backed up by union staff and, where necessary, by outside experts hired by CEIU. According to Meunier-McKay, “Members know their jobs and we need their participation on these committees to guarantee the quality of these new work descriptions.”

The union has written to senior management to propose a joint approach and is seeking meetings as soon as possible to work out the necessary details. As more information becomes available it will be reported on the union’s national website.
