Members working at Service Canada recently began receiving new work descriptions and are concerned that their jobs are accurately portrayed and fully valued. Anticipating that many members would want to challenge these work descriptions, CEIU and Service Canada reached an agreement on a special process that will guide grievances filed against work descriptions and classification levels.
The agreement, known as a Memorandum of Understanding, will see all grievances against work descriptions and classification move directly to the third (national) level of the grievance procedure. The new work descriptions are national in scope and a test case for each job will be presented at the national level. Grievors from across the country will have the opportunity to provide their input to the test case presentation.
Submitting grievances
Members who are contemplating a grievance should speak with their steward or local executive officer for more information. CEIU’s regional union staff are also available to provide assistance and support.
The PSAC recommends the following grievance language for work description grievances:
I grieve the employer‘s failure to provide me with a complete and current statement of duties and responsibilities. This violates Article ____ (Statement of duties) of my collective agreement.
Corrective action requested:
That I be provided with a complete and current statement of the duties of my position, effective from X date.
For classification grievances, the PSAC recommends the following grievance wording:
I grieve the classification of my position.
Corrective Action Requested:
That my position be reclassified upwards effective X date.
The PSAC website provides important information regarding work description and classification grievances and members are strongly encouraged to review this information.
Classification issues are a priority for the union and CEIU is committed to pursuing a fair classification for each of its members.
