Training keeps human rights work on track

Women in Newfoundland and Labrador met in June to explore key issues in human rights and left with plans to spread the lessons learned to their own locals.

The workshop was delivered by Susan Finn, National Vice-President – Human Rights, in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Topics ranged from diversity and employment equity to racism and harassment, and the discussion was lively.

Participants viewed a short video, "The Courage to Stand" which explores the response of the citizens of a city who become the targets of a racist hate attack. It prompted an extended and energetic discussion, and left a lasting impression on the group. (Interested members can obtain a copy of the video for use in their locals.)

Joining the group for a portion of the workshop was a native elder from Grand Forks who brought insights into aboriginal issues in Newfoundland and examples of traditional native craftwork.

Participants appreciated what they learned and developed plans to take back the lessons of the weekend to their locals. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the work on human rights issues continues to move forward.
