International Day for Disabled Persons

December 3 is the International Day for Disabled Persons which seeks to increase the awareness and understanding of disability issues. While many know that about 10% of the world’s population live with disabilities, few are aware that in countries like Canada, with life expectancies over 70 years, individuals spend an average of 8 years (or 11.5% of their lifespan) living with disabilities.

The Day also draws attention to the value of integrating disabled persons into social and economic life. For example, in the U.S. the retention rate for disabled persons who are employed is higher than the rate for those who are not disabled – a significant reduction in turnover costs for employers.

More information about the Day is available on the United Nations’ website.
