Commemoration of Sharpeville shootings

International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination

A peaceful demonstration in South Africa turned bloody on March 21, 1960 when police opened fire, killing 69 and wounding 180. Six years later, the United Nations declared March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Organizations across Canada are working to make March 21 a day for recognition and action. The group Action Week Against Racism uses various media to send their message and offers a number of programs again in 2008. At the level of municipal government, the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities is joining cities across Canada in the battle to overcome racism and discrimination. Check to see if your city or town is doing its part. If it is not, speak to your municipal leaders—they are easy to reach.

The PSAC recently held its National Conference for Racially Visible Members in Montreal with the theme “Be the change; create a better world”. Delegates examined the current backlash and debate on the issue of reasonable accommodation, racial profiling and security, and the cut-backs of public services. CEIU member Mandi Schubert was among those attending and provides her perspective on the conference.

CEIU is active on an on-going basis around the issue racial discrimination. The union’s Human Rights/Race Relations Committee works to eliminate discrimination in the workplace, the union and society at large.

There are many avenues open to members who want to contribute to a world without discrimination. This March 21st, take advantage of the opportunities to “Be the change".
