International Women’s Day – March 8, 2012

CEIU supports and encourages the inclusion of girls to take part in the International Women’s Day Activities throughout Canada.  This year we want to reflect on the history of the Women’s Movement so we can connect with girls and inspire their futures.. In 1908 the women’s garment makers demanded better working conditions which they achieved and we reflect on their accomplishments today.

We want our women activists to connect with girls and inspire their future and continue the fight for human rights, self image, empowerment, health, sexuality and demand better laws for those that commit violence against women and children.

We must remember 1989 in Canada, 14 women died in the Montreal Massacre.  That same year 119 women died of domestic violence. Unfortunately Violence against women and children is still on the rise, we must fight for tougher laws like the gun registry.

From the beginning women have experienced poverty, isolation and discrimination around the world.  Through networking with different groups of Women from various cultures and ethnic backgrounds, including our youth, we can promote issues of equality, diversity, and sisterhood.

The Bread and Roses song originates from the struggle of working-class women, trying to achieve fair wages and a better life.  This song is always sung at our gatherings as a reminder and to inspire women.

Volunteer for community services, support women’s shelters and food banks, etc.

This is a day of Remembrance of our Struggles, our Successes and the passing of the torch onto our youth.
