Distributing over 1500 white ribbons along with information about the origin of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, CEIU’s Headquarters Women’s Committee kept the message of December 6 vital and strong.
Local executive members in the Headquarters region as well as National Vice-President, Jacques Perrin, joined the Women’s Committee in distributing the white ribbons. Together, they covered facilities at Place du Portage, Vanier and Jean Edmunds Towers.
According to Committee President Jocelyne Bordage, a number of younger workers who accepted ribbons were unaware of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women and the murders of 14 women at the l’École Polytechnique de Montréal in 1989. Reaching these workers was especially important and worthwhile, but it “demonstrates that more needs to be done to educate the membership on this issue…” said Bordage.
To ensure that the information distributed would be accessible in both official languages, the Committee covered the cost of translating the materials, originally in English only, from the White Ribbon Campaign (WRC) in Toronto. This gift-in-kind was very much appreciated by the WRC and also included materials on its website that would not otherwise have been available in French.
National President Jeannette Meunier-McKay congratulated the members on their work on the Campaign saying, “This is an important message that we must carry on sending: we remember l’École Polytechnique and we keep working to end violence against women.”
