The issues surrounding a union’s finances are often complex and on day two of CEIU’s convention, delegates began the careful work of building a plan for the coming three years.
Here is a summary of the proceedings for the second day of CEIU’s convention.
MORNING SESSION:
9:00 Report of the Finance Committee
Financial Statements
Auditor’s Reports for the years 2005, 2006 and 2007.
The union’s accountant, Ted R. Lupinski, reviewed the reports for the years 2005, 2006 and 2007. A question and answer period with delegates followed.

Report of the Finance Committee
The committee continued its review of the report with the delegates.

That the revenue calculation for the 2010 budget year be referred back to the committee to correct the total figure to $6,862, 968.
CARRIED
The committee reported back that they had made the change. The effect of the change is that there will now be a surplus of $36,000.

That the revenue estimates be referred back to the committee with the direction that the committee provide a second revenue option based on 18,300 members rather than 17, 800.

The committee reported back with the following:
If 500 members were added to the estimate it would add the following amounts to each year:
2009: $188, 520
2010: $192, 780
2011: $198, 540
The committee recommended that the budget be based on its original assumption of 17,800 members. The recommendation of the committee was CARRIED
Co-chairs of the committee, Brother Rogers and Sister MacInnis proceeded with the review of the budget by line item.
Emergency Resolution ER-1:

The following resolution was placed on the floor and was CARRIED:
WHEREAS Stephen Harper has consistently shown he has little or no regard for average Canadians, and
WHEREAS the Conservative Government has clearly demonstrated their disdain for labour, and
WHEREAS the Conservative governments of the past and present have shown that they have no intent to expeditiously bargain fair collective agreements for PSAC members.
Therefore, be it resolved that immediately upon close of this convention, the CEIU National President send a communiqué to all CEIU members explaining the importance of ensuring Stephen Harper and the Conservatives do not obtain a majority government; to promote participation in the PSAC Federal Election Campaign; and to encourage members to vote for socially progressive candidates who have demonstrated they support all Canadians, not just the elite few.
