Leave agreement gives local leaders time to carry out union duties

CEIU and Citizenship and Immigration Canada have reached an agreement that will give union leaders leave with pay to carry out union duties.

The agreement is designed to provide union officers with the time they need for a range of activities which include labour-management meetings and the delivery of training sessions. A total of 1956 hours of leave per year will be divided between union leaders at the national, regional and local levels. CEIU is responsible for the allocation of leave and has informed union officers and locals at CIC of their respective entitlements.

“This agreement is very helpful in lifting some of the burden from union officers at CIC, most notably those at the local level,” said National President Jeannette Meunier-McKay, “however union participation remains a voluntary activity for the most part, and we very much appreciate the contribution made by our union officers and stewards.”
