March 8 is International Women’s Day and the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) is launching a year-long campaign to promote women’s economic equality. The CLC points out that the salary gap exists in every profession, including judges. Overall in Canada, women make 30% less than men—with university educated women make 32% less.
The campaign, titled “Equality! Once and for all!”, aims at raising awareness about the growing economic inequality of women. The media under-report the issue, the politicians do little or nothing about it and employers are happy with the 30% discount they get by hiring women. More about the campaign is available at the CLC website.
“Economic inequality is linked to other critical issues, from affordable day care to better pensions” said CEIU National President Jeannette Meunier-McKay, “and the women of our union know it. The CLC has put together a great campaign and I’m urging members to get involved.”
Campaign events will be held in many regions across the country and materials to use in your workplace can be downloaded from the CLC website.
