Sending the message in Kingston: we need quality public services and a fair contract

CEIU took its message to the streets of Kingston, Ontario on November 2 with a demonstration that highlighted the need for both quality public services and progress in contract talks.

“We work with the elderly, the unemployed, the disabled and those who are new to the country,” said National President Jeannette Meunier-McKay, “and they deserve better than being told to sort out all their problems over the internet or through a call centre. Many want full, face to face service and we think they should have it.”

The CEIU and the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) are calling for improvements to the public services that help to anchor a fair, safe and prosperous society. Instead of public services that make sense, the last two federal governments have offered only tax cuts favouring the well off. As a policy to address issues faced by most Canadians, tax cuts have been a failure as the growing income gap clearly shows.

The union is also searching for a fair contract in negotiations with the government. Progress has been slow, with the Treasury Board engaging in its usual foot-dragging at the bargaining table. The Kingston demonstrators drew attention to the problems in negotiations and showed support for their bargaining team that was finishing a round of talks on November 2. CEIU locals had been demonstrating their support for the team earlier in the same week.

“We need to see this government take steps in the right direction” said Meunier-McKay, “and the members in Kingston did a great job sending this message.”
