Staying ready in Sydney

If negotiations fail this coming weekend, CEIU members in Sydney are ready to walk. This was the clear message members gave CEIU National President Jeannette Meunier-McKay as she toured their worksite on October 7.

The local encompasses a large office and a number of smaller offices in Sydney area. Despite the challenge this presents, the local is well organized for strike action. Many had hoped that strike action would begin October 7 and were unhappy with the decision to delay it. Others had adopted a wait-and-see attitude to the new bargaining talks, but both groups were adamant that action begin next week if a good offer is not received.

Commenting on the two views, Meunier-McKay advised members to stay focused on their strong commitment to a good agreement, not on the decision to postpone the strike. “We are at a key stage in bargaining and what counts now is unity” she added.

CEIU locals across the country are ready to strike. Time will tell if the government is ready to make a decent offer.
